The frequency, size and sophistication of distributed denial of service attacks are increasing sharply, according to the latest data [.pdf] from Akamai.

For example, the number of DDoS attacks more than doubled in the second quarter of this year compared to the same quarter last year. And the frequency of “mega attacks” increased significantly, with 12 DDoS attacks peaking at more than 100 Gigabits per second and five attacks peaking at more than 50 million packets per second in the second quarter.

To counter the increasing DDoS threat, Akamai teamed with Internap to address the needs of organizations that require high app performance and reliability and can’t afford the latency or downtime that DDoS attacks can cause.
