Internap’s innovative data center sustainability initiatives recognized for unique ability to efficiently address growing customer power consumption requirements
ATLANTA – October 24, 2011 – Internap Network Services Corporation (NASDAQ: INAP), a provider of intelligent IT Infrastructure services, announced today that IDG’s Computerworld, the leading IT media brand dedicated to providing peer perspective, IT leadership and business results, has selected it as one of the top Green-IT Organizations for 2011. This honor is part of the IT media outlet’s annual Top Green-IT Organizations feature, which was published in the Oct. 24 issue of Computerworld and online at Computerworld.com.
For the fourth year in a row, Computerworld set out to identify organizations that are implementing smart, efficient strategies to achieve “green IT.” Organizations were invited to complete a comprehensive questionnaire online from June to August 2011. Seventy organizations participated. Computerworld then contacted representatives at the participating organizations, to verify that the information provided on their organization’s survey was truthful and accurate. Only those organizations that filed verification letters were considered. Computerworld then applied a set of criteria, developed with the help of green-IT industry experts, to identify the organizations that are working to reduce energy consumption in IT equipment and are using technology to conserve energy and lower carbon emissions. Based on the weighting scheme developed, the top 12 Green-IT Users and top 12 Green-IT Vendors lists were chosen.

As customer demand for power continues to increase, Internap has demonstrated its commitment to efficiency and sustainability through a variety of unique initiatives that reduce consumption across its data center footprint. In June, Internap’s Santa Clara facility, became the first public data center to achieve Green Globes® certification. As part of the process, Internap adhered to standards related to consuming fewer fossil fuels, reducing greenhouse emissions, conserving water, reducing pollution and minimizing impact on land surrounding the building. Internap is also working toward LEED and Energy Star environmental building ratings at its Santa Clara site and other new facilities under construction in Los Angeles and Dallas. LEED, Green Globes and Energy Star certification will be sought for all future new facilities.
Internap is helping data center managers address the growing power requirements with sensitivity to the environment and is designing all future data centers with an eye toward green practices that maximize energy efficiency and reduce dependence on fossil fuels and natural resources with initiatives that include:
- Reflective roofing – white roofing material designed to decrease surface temperature and reduce cost of cooling and CO 2 emissions
- Variable speed fans – cooling fans automatically scale speeds according to ambient room temperatures to reduce power consumption and decrease amount of heat emitted from fans
- Ultrasonic humidification systems – rather than using electricity to heat water to create humidity through steam, a safe chemical mist is applied to control static electricity without water
- Reclaimed or graywater – water is recycled by the local water utility so there is no need to tap into potable water systems
